Fun Indoor Games And Activities For Happy Kids
Too hot, too rainy or too smoggy to go out? Twelve indoor games and activities that keep kids busy, active and happy at home.
Between scorching summers, monsoon downpours and winter smog, Pakistani children spend a lot of days indoors. With a few ideas up your sleeve, those days can be the most fun of the week.
Active games to burn energy
1. Indoor obstacle course. Cushions to jump over, a table to crawl under, a line of tape to balance on. Time each run and let the kids redesign the course.
2. Freeze dance. Play music and stop it at random — everyone freezes. Anyone who moves does a silly task.
3. Balloon keep-up. Keep a balloon off the floor using only hands, then only heads. Simple, safe and surprisingly tiring.
4. Treasure hunt. Hide a small prize and leave picture clues for little ones or written riddles for older children.
Quiet activities for calm time
5. Puzzles. A jigsaw spread out on the floor can absorb a child for an hour — and families often end up finishing it together.
6. Building challenges. Give a challenge — the tallest tower, a bridge between two chairs, a house for a toy — and let them build.
7. Story basket. Put five random objects in a basket and take turns making up a story that uses all of them.
8. Reading fort. Drape a sheet over two chairs, add cushions and a torch, and fill it with picture books.
Creative projects
9. Craft afternoon. Paper, glue, crayons and old boxes can become masks, puppets or a whole cardboard city.
10. Pretend shop. Price some toys or packets from the kitchen and let the children run a shop with play money — great for counting practice.
Family games
11. Board and card games. Memory games, ludo and simple card games teach turn-taking, counting and how to lose without tears.
12. Charades for kids. Act out animals, jobs or favourite cartoon characters for the others to guess.
Tips for a good indoor day
- Alternate active and quiet activities so energy does not boil over.
- Prepare one "special" activity you only bring out on indoor days.
- Keep screen time as a reward at the end, not the default.
